Billy

Billy left home Sunday morning

He grabbed a swag and a can of beer

Left a note to the sleeping girl lying beside him Saying 'l don't know how long till I'm back here'

He picked up a hitchhiker on the highway Prettiest girl he'd ever seen And she wore flowers in her long brown hair Had eyes of piercing emerald green

And she said 'boy are you going my way?' He said 'girl l think l will She said 'but you don't know where I'm going' He said 'we're going straight to heaven and we're leaving this hell'

She just smiled and sat down beside him

He drove and they didn't say a word

And the miles that passed in total silence Were the sweetest sounds that Billy had ever heard

They came to a crossroads near a station A train was coming down the track She got out and kissed him on the forehead And said 'don't wait Billy l ain't never coming back'

So he sat watched the train disappearing Till it turned to shimmer in the early morning haze She'd left a flower on the seat there beside him Billy shook himself like he'd been in a daze

So he turned round went back to where he came from And he was home before she opened up her eyes He put the flower on the pillow there beside And gently kissed her as he cried

And she woke when the sun came a shining On the flower and the pillow where she lay She saw the man she loved sitting there beside her And she said 'Hey Billy, what are you doing today?'
