I’ve grown an extra pair of legs. Small, chubby ones that are always two paces behind me. You follow me around the house, tripping me up, gripping the hem of my skirt to stop yourself from falling. In the shower, I open shampoo-filled eyes to see your solemn little face watching my every move. In the toilet, a small hand rests on my knee as I sit. Even at night, you find your way into my bed. Your warm body fits into mine like a jigsaw puzzle piece.
You are boundary-less. Everything and everyone are extensions of you. You trespass my heart, my mind, my dark corners. As much as this closeness can chaff and as much as I crave solitude, I know that in a few years you will be running in the opposite direction. Your gaze will move outwards the horizon and I will miss your sloppy toddler kisses.
