About the competition

In conjunction with the exhibition Love, Loss & Intimacy the NGV invites you to create your own piece of writing exploring notions of love, loss or intimacy, under 500 words. If you're over 18 years of age and a Victorian resident, post your entry on the blog (1 entry per person) for the chance to win a romantic weekend getaway for two at Sofitel Melbourne On Collins and lunch for two at Persimmon.

The judging panel is comprised of three judges: Professor Jennifer Strauss (Editor of the Oxford Anthology of Australian Love Poetry), Penny Modra (Editor of Three Thousand; The Age arts columnist) and Richard Watts (Presenter of SmartArts on TripleR).

Entries accepted until 11 July 2010 and the winner of the competition will be announced and their entry recited on 18 July following on from the 2pm Floor Talk.

A Missed Opportunity

I'm telling you this because it's true, I really am in love with you, When everything is said and done, To me you are the perfect one.

Don't ask me why,
cause I don't know,
But everyday the feelings grow.
I didn't love you when the time was right, Now these feelings have come like a thief in the night,

They snuck up on me, I didn't realise, But now I can see through the clearest of eyes, That it's you that I want and it's you that I need, When you told me you liked me I should've agreed.

But I was a fool, I turned you away,
And now I regret it, every single day.
When it comes to love, you're all that I look for, You're caring, you're funny and never a bore.

When I feel like crying you're helping me through, When I have a problem you know what to do, You've seen me laughing, you've seen me sad, We've been through things both good and bad,

And I hope we continue to stay close friends, Until the time when the world must end, So until then I want you to know, through and through, That I will always love you.
