The night is starry with the moonlight promise of eternity silver on the dark smooth sea. The stars and moon were here before us and will be here after us, forever...not forever, but as long as the Earth is orbiting. He gathers her in his arms. "I will love you, as long as the Earth exists." She pouts. "What about forever?" "There is no such thing,"he replies. "But I shall love you for as long as I can..." "How long is that?"she asks petulantly. "You should love me forever." "I am being honest,"he says. "I will love you nearly for eternity - until the Earth implodes and the Sun becomes a Red Dwarf." "How long will that be?" She stamps her foot. "Why can't you just say you'll love me forever?" "Because it isn't true," he retorts. "Just say it!" She is getting angry now. "If you really loved me, you would love me forever." He looks at his watch. "Right now," he says, "I am going. And so is my love for you."

About the competition
In conjunction with the exhibition Love, Loss & Intimacy the NGV invites you to create your own piece of writing exploring notions of love, loss or intimacy, under 500 words. If you're over 18 years of age and a Victorian resident, post your entry on the blog (1 entry per person) for the chance to win a romantic weekend getaway for two at Sofitel Melbourne On Collins and lunch for two at Persimmon.
The judging panel is comprised of three judges: Professor Jennifer Strauss (Editor of the Oxford Anthology of Australian Love Poetry), Penny Modra (Editor of Three Thousand; The Age arts columnist) and Richard Watts (Presenter of SmartArts on TripleR).
Entries accepted until 11 July 2010 and the winner of the competition will be announced and their entry recited on 18 July following on from the 2pm Floor Talk.
