Waiting for the Storm

The sun came up today and I slept on
wrapped in dreams of you
not wanting to leave
knowing the longer I stayed
the harder their fading would be

The clouds came out and the thunder rolled
and I walked out to nowhere
waiting for the storm to soak me
finding only a patter of raindrops
imitating tears as I arrived home

The lost moments in between have passed
sorting through boxed memories and
hoarded wrapping paper, automated tasks
An old woman clutching photographs
left behind in time, wishing for yesterday

The night is still and hot and stale and I am
waiting and watching, endlessly searching
memories replayed, reconstructed broken words
a litany of regret and guilt and tears
The house is filled with silence and disquiet

Perhaps the storm will break later
and I will sleep restlessly
as it rains and crashes and howls
and tonight I'll hope to dream
of your smile and words to wash away my grief

And tomorrow, the sun will rise
and I will sleep on and on and on...
