You Told Me

You told me
Told me that if I was to be
Yours
Every word would need to be
Saturated and every gesture
Dealt with perfect love.

You warned me
Warned me that if my words weren't as
Yours
If my thoughts were without poise
My voice without pure cunning
Then I should be someone else's.

And I said what if I can't be good
Enough
Would it be OK if I shined soft your shoes
And dreamed your dreams washed your washing
Bent down doubled to offer
My love without troubles.

And you said
Why can't you be like Nick Cave?
